Frequently Asked Questions

What should I give the Tax Shop to prepare my taxes?

  • Every return is different, but there are some basic documents nearly everyone has which you will need to supply us with so we can prepare your tax return, such as:
  • Driver's licenses, state IDs, or passports, as well your children's birthdates and social security numbers
  • Wage documentation such as W2s, 1099s, unemployment forms
  • Statements of other income such as 1099-Interests, 1099-Dividends,1099-Retirements,  Social Security, pension/401k withdrawals, etc.
  • Generalized deductions, such as donations to charity, out of pocket medical and dental expenses, medical miles, etc.
  • If you own your house, bring your 1098 Mortgage Statement and property tax payment information. If you rent, calculate how much you paid in rent during the tax year you're filing for.
  • If you have a home business or are a realtor, bring any and all business expenses (categorized and totaled), as well as the income for your business

When should I contact an accountant?

  • For personal or established business taxes, you should contact an accountant two to three months before taxes are due (April 15th for personal returns; check in  with us to see when your corporation taxes are due).
  • As soon as you start to think about your business, an accountant can help you take the next steps. We can discuss your business' organization, tax purposes and operations, along with target pricing and profit margins.

How much are your services?

  • What we charge a client depends on the client's needs, and how much time is put into their return. Our average client will pay between $150 to $300 to complete their personal returns, depending on how complicated the return is.
  • For business returns, prices generally begin at $250 (This includes Schedules C and E on personal returns).
  • Estate returns vary most significantly, but a typical client can expect to pay at least $500.
  • Once we have all of your documents and can estimate how in-depth your return will be, we can provide you with an accurate rate.

Where is my refund?

  • Once the Tax Shop has filed your tax return, we have no control over how long the IRS or state takes to process your refund. In a typical year, federal refunds are issued within 21 business days of filing the return.
  • You can check your federal refund status here: https://sa.www4.irs.gov/irfof/lang/en/irfofgetstatus.jsp
  • You can check your New Jersey refund status here: https://www20.state.nj.us/TYTR_TGI_INQ/jsp/prompt.jsp
  • You can check your Pennsylvania refund status here: https://mypath.pa.gov/_/
  • For any other state refund status, simply google "where is my refund ____", fill in the blank with the state name, and click the .gov link.

How do I get my information from the IRS?

  • You can review what the IRS has on file for you by creating an ID.me account to log into IRS.gov here: https://www.irs.gov/payments/online-account-for-individuals
